Cloud Day

In keeping with our August sky theme, today we talked about clouds. But the most cloudy thing in our house at the moment is my poor Amelie's disposition. I'll say its mostly because she is teething that my precious one can turn into a screaming lunatic on a dime. And I can't blame her. If I had jagged enamel breaking through my gums, I'd be pissed too.

So here is how it plays out. Things are la-tee-da fine and I say to my bundle of smiles who is smacking her lips at my feet, "Are you thirsty, Amie?"

"Yesh," with a nod of certainty that gives me full confidence we are about to solve a problem diplomatically.

"Do you want some water?"

"Yesh."

I proceed to put ice and water in a lidded cup with a straw and hand it to her. Then, a demon takes over my baby's body. She crumbles to the floor, screaming as though she just witnessed some beloved dog get hit by a steamroller.  I cannot console her.  She kicks, smacking away the water in a furious rant.  I recoil, playing back the scenario in my head.  Perhaps a shot of incisor pain brought her to her knees and this is all just coincidental timing?  I check her gums for bleeding and her skin for a hidden injury.

Nothing.

This ravaged wasteland of emotion continues to spill all over my carefully structured day.  I put her in her seat and think.  She drank water from a different cup this morning.

"Amie, do you want the other lid to your cup?"

She looks up - eyes clear and full of hope.  Her temper dissolves into a Care Bear like state of serenity.

"Yesh."

I replace the lid.  She picks up her water and drinks, feet kicking happily as if nothing had gone awry.  She smiles.

The same scenario played out this evening when Daniel offered to help her get the last bites of her yogurt.  Yes, she wanted help, but not that way!  It took us five minutes to understand that she wanted the bite delivered as a choo-choo train, dammit.

The other clouds in our house today were in a happier context...

Sequoia cut clouds out of cardstock.
She was a litte bewildered by a stray slice.
We ate whipped cream clouds on
watermelon for afternoon snack.

We made clouds with shaving cream.
Amie's pic of this project is at the top of the post.
We used cotton balls to make pictures of the sky.
See how Ms. Happy Pants is really excited about
the demonstration cloud I glued down?
I read in a baby sign language book that gesture
means, "Get this f-ing cotton ball off, now!"
We also went to the main library this morning, but the girls were more interested in the foam shape pit than literature.

To top off a wonderful cloud day, the sky poured open this evening right at bedtime and Coya and I got to talk more about rain and weather.  I'm taking the storm as a fated sign that our What is in the Sky? theme is indeed blessed by the heavens and that the universe conspires to teach us all.  Even the grumpy ones.

  1. I love this post. It always amazes me what can set my kids into a frenzy and also how easily they can switch off the tears when whatever it is gets fixed. I feel for you - my youngest is working on her last two molars and I am so ready for teething to be behind us. Love your cloud crafts!

    1. Hey there! Thanks for the feedback! I will also be thankful when her teeth are in. I can't tell sometimes if she really is in pain or if she is just playing me to get her pacifier more of the day. I wouldn't put it past her... I'm a pushover. :)
